I was perched in my usual spot at the coffeehouse and I overheard two writers comparing notes about their methods. They used a lot of fancy terms—many I didn’t know, but they’re in some fancy MFA program at NYU.
I looked at my stories in Scrivener.
I don’t write in order. I flat out refuse to write a formal outline. I spend most of my time meandering around with my characters thinking “Hm, what would happen if…?”
Apparently, that makes me like Vonnegut. I always thought I had a crap ton of bad writing habits, but the point is I do what works for me.
You should, too.
Don’t get hung up on labels or methods. If we suggest something and it doesn’t quite work for you, that’s okay. Be open to trying new things and mercilessly drop what doesn’t work. The best method is the one that gets you putting words on the page with the least amount of angst.
